Our sustainability vision for Coco Beach resort

At Coco Beach we care deeply about the lives of our children (and their children) and therefore the environment and climate change. Our vision is that Coco Beach must become a fully sustainable resort, with a positive carbon footprint and Co2 neutral. Our CEO envisions the project to be net energy supplying, i.e. Coco Beach must eventually generate more energy than it consumes (net electricity delivery back into the grid).

Mandatory residential solar electric (PV) systems

To accomplish this, management has decided that all houses sold in 2019 and thereafter will have a mandatory residential solar electric (PV) system with a certain capacity installed (including all components, such as solar panels, solar panel mountain racks, inverter, array DC disconnect). The system will be connected to the grid.

No additional cost

The prices of the houses as displayed on this website will not increase with this mandatory solar power package. The cost of the mandatory residential solar electric system is included.

How does it work?

We offer three packages, only the first package is mandatory and the other 2 packages are optional at additional cost to the villa buyer. However, in all three packages the mandatory capacity is included at no additional cost.

Mandatory package-2000 Wattpeak at no additional cost

  • +/- 8 panels with a capacity of 2000 Watt peak
  • Solar panel mountain racks
  • Inverter
  • Array DC disconnect
  • Cabling
  • Power meter (measuring power delivered from and supplied to the grid).

Estimated electricity production: 3000 kWh per year.
Estimated electricity cost savings per year: 660 $.
Estimated cost savings over 25 year lifespan: 16500 $ (excluding inflation).

The mandatory package covers the electricity consumption of most of your regular appliances (excluding airconditioning).

Optional package A at additional cost

Mandatory free package (2000 Wattpeak) plus additional 3800 Wattpeak for airconditioning for a total of 5800 Wattpeak.

  • +/- 20 panels of 290 Wattpeak/panel for total capacity of 5800 Watt Peak
  • Solar panel mountain racks
  • Inverter
  • Array DC disconnect
  • Cabling
  • Power meter (measuring power delivered from and supplied to the grid).

Estimated electricity production: 8700 kWh per year.
Estimated electricity cost savings per year: 1914 $.
Estimated cost savings over 25 year lifespan: 47850 $ (excluding inflation).

The optional package “B” covers the electricity consumption of most of your regular appliances and contributes greatly to your airconditioning needs.

The additional cost of this package is 9900$.

Optional package B at additional cost

Mandatory free package (2000 Wattpeak) plus tailor made solution to fully cover 100% of your energy consumption including optional capacity for an electric car or for instance electric golf carts.

The optional package “C” covers all over your current and future electricity consumption basis certain assumptions.

3 attractive solutions, mandatory, option A or option B

2000 Wattpeak.
Basically this package is free and the cost of this package will be absorbed by
the developer Panama Portfolio. House prices as displayed on the website will not
increase.

5800 Wattpeak
at an additional cost of 9900$ to generate solar electricity needed for the usage of certain appliances and a contribution to the energy consumption of the airconditioning system

Co2 neutral or energy neutral villa
including capacity to charge electric vehicles. In this case a separate offer will be made depending on the expected electricity consumption. Also, in this case a solar water heating system might be included.

More information-background and interesting facts

The calculation of energy consumption per villa depends on various factors out of which the most important are:

  • The required delta T relative to the outside temperature. In general when controlling a residential climate in Panama the rule is that delta T = outside temperature (degrees F) minus 5 or 6 degrees. A Delta T above 8 is considered too high.
  • Location
  • Layout and design of the house
  • Insulation
  • Window size and specifications
  • Wall specifications
  • Ceiling specifications
  • Roof specifications
  • # people
  • Orientation of the house
  • # of rooms with airconditioning.

Panama Portfolio has developed a model to estimate the expected cooling capacity needed to achieve the desired delta T taking all above factors into account.

Worldwide the consumption of electricity is as follows:

  • Currently according to local news agency Anpanama local energy company Edechi has 19 solar power clients in Chiriquí. In Panama currently only 300 solar power clients have connections with energy companies Edechi, Edemet and Ensa in total. According to statistics from the National Energy Secretariat in 2018 Panama had an installed electricity generation capacity of 3423 MW of which 4% corresponded tot solar energy parks
  • Panamanian electricity costs depends on annual consumption and location and ranges currently between 0,20 and 0,23 $/kWh
  • An average 24000 BTU airco unit in American households consumes on average 318 Watt/hour, i.e. 228 kWh per month or 2736 kWh per year. This is an average, and varies greatly per state. Source: Department of Energy USA
  • Average household electricity consumptions exceeds 15000 kWh per year in Florida basis an average size per home of 1669 square feet. Source: Energy Information Agency EIA
